Ever Felt Like Giving Up on a Project?

A few weeks ago in our Momentum membership, we dove into something every creative knows all too well—the dreaded 'Creative U.'

Ever heard of it?

The “Creative U” is basically the rollercoaster ride that artists go through during a project.

It's all about the ups and downs, the mental hurdles, and the emotional speed bumps that show up along the way.

We stumbled upon this concept years ago, and wow, has it been a game-changer.

Especially when that new-project buzz starts to fade and self-doubt comes knocking, making everything feel just a bit too hard…

But here’s the thing: knowing that doubt and struggle are totally normal parts of the process?

That’s a mental lifesaver.

It keeps you moving forward, with the confidence that this, too, shall pass.

So, let’s break down the stages of the ‘Creative U,’ so next time you’re deep in a project, you’ll have a trusty guide to help you through:

Stage 1 - The Excitement Phase:
Ah, the sweet beginning! Whether you're gearing up for an exhibition, working on a commission, or just playing around with a new idea, this is the phase where you’re buzzing with energy and excitement. You can practically see your creation coming to life.

Top tip: Hold on tight to this feeling. It’s your rocket fuel! Stay connected to that initial spark—it’ll keep you motivated and inspired as you move forward.

Stage 2 - The Doubt Phase:
And then, the sneaky self-doubt creeps in. You start questioning everything—your abilities, the quality of your work, even your creative direction.

Top tip:
Notice those thoughts without letting them run the show. Remember, this is just your brain’s way of trying to protect you from the unknown. Don’t buy into it. Instead, thank that part of you for trying to help, and then keep on keeping on. When doubt gets loud, take a break, get outside, or do something that gets you out of your head and back into your body.

Stage 3 - The Struggle Phase:
Here come the challenges! Maybe it's a technical hiccup, a creative block, or just plain frustration with your progress.

Top tip: Know that everything is figureoutable! You’re smart, you’ve got this, and there’s always a way through. When you hit a wall, step away for a bit, shake off the stress, and trust that the solution will come.

Stage 4 - The Breakthrough Phase:
Keep going, and soon enough, you’ll hit your stride again. Inspiration returns, problems get solved, and progress happens!

Top tip: Celebrate your perseverance! You’ve earned it.

Stage 5 - The Resolution Phase:
As you near the finish line, you’ll feel a mix of accomplishment and maybe a touch of anxiety about sharing your work with the world.

Top tip: Focus on how amazing it is that you’ve created something from nothing. That’s pure magic my friend! Bask in that pride as you share your work, and lean on your supportive circle to lift you up.

Stage 6 - The Reflection Phase:
This one’s often skipped, but it’s key. Instead of rushing into your next project, take a moment to reflect on what you’ve just accomplished. Celebrate the wins, learn from the challenges, and apply those insights to your future work.

Top tip: Take the time to celebrate yourself! And remember, you’re a work in progress with so much more to give. Reflect on what worked, what didn’t, and keep growing.

And there you have it!

We hope this helps you the next time you’re diving into a new creative venture.

Understanding this cycle can make the emotional and mental hurdles a bit easier to navigate, leading to a more resilient and productive creative practice.

Because we want to see you keep bringing your incredible gifts into the world!
